Warren Collum

Warren Collum is a contemporary watercolour artist whose practice is grounded in direct observation. Trained as a wildlife illustrator, he developed a deep commitment to working from life, recognising that the vitality, immediacy, and authenticity of direct experience cannot be recreated in the studio. Painting outdoors remains central to his practice.

Working throughout the year across the landscapes of North Devon, particularly around the coastline of Westward Ho! and the Taw and Torridge estuary, Warren responds to the changing rhythms of weather, light, and wildlife as they unfold. His paintings emerge from sustained engagement with place, returning repeatedly to familiar areas over many years. Through this process, he has developed a deep understanding of seasonal change, the behaviour cycles of wildlife, and the rhythms of migration that shape the natural world.

Working directly from life, each painting becomes a record of time, attention, and experience. Rather than simply describing a landscape, the work reflects an ongoing relationship with place—formed through observation, memory, and repeated encounters with the environments he paints.

Each work is created on location, embracing the unpredictability of changing conditions. The immediacy of the field allows the paintings to retain a freshness and energy that comes from responding to the moment, while reflecting years of careful study and close observation.
